Your donation will accomplish great things on the ground for the most endangered species and habitats. There is nothing symbolic about our work. We purchase real acres in real places and protect them forever. It's that simple. We do not spend money on lobbying or advocacy. Need more reasons to support us?
We take rapid action to protect threatened habitats while supporting communities.
WLT-US Patron and honored scientist E.O. Wilson estimates that we are losing 137 plant and animal species from the rainforests every single day. Our model of direct land purchase effectively stems this loss. Also, in partnering with people on the ground in the countries where we work, we provide education, training, and economic assistance in the form of jobs and eco-tourism at our Reserves.
We hold Charity Navigator's coveted 4-Star Rating and have very low overhead.
WLT-US maintains a small and highly experienced staff in the US. Our CEO was even listed on Charity Navigator's Top 10 Highly-Rated Charities with Low Paid CEOs. We also consistently earn the highest rating from the independent evaluator for being one of the most efficient conservation nonprofits in the United States.
Saving rainforests has a direct impact on your day to day life.
Rainforests house the vast majority of earth's biodiversity and are global conservation priorities, in part, because they afford so many benefits to every one of us. Over 80% of the developed world's diet originated in rainforests including 3,000 fruits. Rainforests are also the "lungs of the planet", providing more than 20% of the world's oxygen in the Amazon alone. Saving rainforests also aids in the fight against global warming as these forests are the world's most effective carbon sinks. And did you know that a quarter of all medicines currently on the market are sourced from rainforests?
Owed to Nature: Medicines from Rainforests
When you next visit your local pharmacy to fill a prescription for yourself, a family member, or a friend, consider this: nearly 90% of human diseases known to medical science can be treated with prescription drugs derived from nature. And think of the hundreds of thousands of jobs provided to those that discover, grow, harvest, process and market these medicinals.Nature supports both our health and economy. To learn more about how the earth’s tropical forests themselves are major contributors to the treatment of disease and relief of suffering, click here.
